Thursday HW

READING:
Read Fiction for 30 Minutes, LOG, & jot your thinking throughout your entire book.

WRITING:
Finish adding transitions to your writing piece so that your reasons and evidence flows smoothly together.
Draft introductions using prompts to get you started:

  • What people need to know is that...

  • Many people don't know/think/realize, but I've come to know/think it's important...
  • Sometimes in life...

  • I have found...

  • Sometimes people ask...Well, I have found...
One example:
What parents need to know is that the schools their children attend and the teachers they have are nowhere near as important as the education that children receive at home. My mother has been my most important teacher. She has taught me to love reading, have confidence in myself, and regard my job as a hobby. I tell parents not to worry; what they do need to know is that they will be their child's most important teacher.

Second Example:
I used to think that the teacher a child had in school would make or break them. I would worry frantically if I had a teacher that wasn't superb, but I've come to realize that the teachers who matter most aren't always the official ones kids have in school. In my life, my mother has been my most important teacher. She taught me to love reading, have confidence in myself, and regard my job as a hobby.

WRITING:
Draft one mini stories.

EXAMPLE:
My mother has been my most important teacher by teaching me to have confidence in myself. For example, one Christmas, my mom went to pull the roast out of the oven and bumped her forehead on the inside of the oven. To stop the swelling and blistering, my mom quickly ran to the freezer, grabbed a bag of peas, and draped them over her forehead. Guests and family members arrived for our Christmas party, while mom greeted them with the frozen peas on forehead. The guests weren’t surprised to see mom’s odd ice-pack because she always does what pleases her without much concern for what others think.  Whenever I get injured, I now find myself running to the freezer and grabbing the first frozen food item that will work as an ice pack. This shows that my mom has been my greatest teacher by teaching me to have confidence in myself.

Weekend Homework

Read, log and jot each day for at least 30 minutes

Week in Review

1. We earned three more pieces to Mrs. Potato head... that means only 1 more piece to earn our party! GF
2. In gym we took the pacer test, played dodgeball, and sit. This was our last pacer test! WT
3. In reading workshop, we went to the library to search for narrative nonfiction books. We are starting a new bend in nonfiction reading, we learned how to read expository and now we are going to learn how to read narrative. We talked about how we can use strategies from reading fiction and apply it to reading narrative nonfiction. We can still use boxes and bullets, notice our characters, notice a repeating idea, and achievement and struggles.PD, GF, OP
4. We went to the Connecticut Science Museum. There was a hurricane tube that had a fan that created high speeds (78 mph) to recreate what it feels like to be in a real hurricane. WJ & DM
5. In writing, we are creating mini stories to use as evidence to support our reasons. We also just finished publishing our independent writing projects. We are organizing our essays with an envelope and file folders to show our thesis and supports. We will put the evidence for each support in the appropriate file folder to help keep us organized. We shared our independent reading projects with our partners. Our partners helped us use a checklist to notice skills we are using and skills we are not using. We then set goals for our next project together. We even started brainstorming fiction ideas for our next realistic fiction writing project. ML, AP, ET, AT, CH
6. In math we made a partner proof to show that two equations can be equal. We talked about the "Sharing is Caring" strategy. We also talked about the algorithm for addition and how it works. We found out that you can use the algorithm in two different ways, the U.S. algorithm and the "other" algorithm. We also talked about the importance of making our math thinking clear and concise so other mathematicians can follow each step we take. SL, CH, WJ, GF, WD

Week in Review

  1. In reading workshop, we are learning how to use boxes and bullets to help us organize our thinking for main idea and supporting details. We are trying to become the experts in one topic. If we are looking for a main idea we can look for a pop out sentence and try to support it with key details. The pop out sentence is either in the beginning of a paragraph or the end. We also got to read our fiction books and use the strategies we know. We also talked about the importance of bringing forward all the stuff we have learned. See the chart we created together below:
       (ML, CH, WT, GF, SL)
  2. In gym, we did the flexibility test. We got three tries to reach forward as far as you could. CW, WD
  3. In math, we have been using the phonebook and talking about numbers up to 1,000. We are learning to use the open number to model our thinking when adding. When adding, we can break up a number into smaller landmark numbers to help add. We learning many strategies for adding so we have a large tool belt of strategies for adding. PD, KL, CH, AP
  4. We had two parties, we celebrated Halloween and Lachlan's birthday! AT
  5. In writing workshop we have been brainstorming essay ideas. Here are some strategies we learned:
We are also using thought prompts to push our thinking and write long about one topic. OnHalloween, we wrote Halloween essays. We got prompts to help us with essay ideas and used essay bootcamp to help us write them! CH, AT, ML, ET
  6. We are studying for a BIG Spanish test and it is going on our report card this year. JW

Week In Review 10/7 - 10/11

  1. We earned two more pieces to the Mrs. Potato head, we need 5 more to go! SL
  2. We looked through our reading notebooks and were reflecting on our reading lives. We noticed strategies that we have been using a lot and strategies that we want to work more with. We are reaching the end of our character unit. We have been pushing ourselves to look at a series of ideas and push ourselves to see commonalities between them. As readers, we are trying to use thought prompts to push our thinking and to make our jots complex. We learned how to not leave jots or thoughts behind. CR, WJ, GF, CW, AT
  3. In gym, we have been practicing our fitness test by working on our push ups, curl ups, and even dodgeball. WT
  4. We started Social Studies today and we read a book called, "Rachel's Home on Bear Mountain." We created a chart and wrote or sketched everything we know about Native Americans in Connecticut and Connecticut's Environment. After we read the book, we shared our new thinking about Connecticut's environment. We compared our old thinking with our new learning. SL, CW, OP
  5. In writing, we are working hard on our independent writing projects. We are all at different parts of the writing process. Some writers are drafting, others are editing & revising. We started word study and have been practicing our sorts. We had an on demand writing piece about an issue/argument that we felt strongly about. On Tuesday, we shared our stories with our parents during the writing celebration. SL, ET, OP, WD, AP
  6. In math, we started making a proof for the amusement park problem. We had to figure out how many strips of ten the teachers would get. We also had to figure out how many tickets we bought in all. There were 100 kids and each kid received 42 tickets. How many tickets in all is this? How many strips of ten. PD
  7. In music, Mrs. Lettera greets us with the hello song! SM
  8. In art, we are have to draw something small in the background, something medium in the middleground, and something large in the foreground. SM

Week in Review

  1.  On Tuesday, we are having our realistic fiction writing celebration. We hope you all can come from 12:30-1:30! We are getting ready for the celebration by working in groups to present all about writing workshop and the process we went through as writers. In writing workshop, we have started an independent writing project. We are all writing a realistic fiction story. We are getting ideas about writing from our JR books and asking ourselves, "What did my author do to write this part so well?" and then trying it out in our own writing. We also made a calendar and have been putting our assignments and due dates on it to help keep track of where we are in the writing process. We set a due date of November 7th to be published. Since we are all in different places of the writing process, we are coming up with our own writing homework to keep us on track. AP, KL, WV, LM, CH, GF
  2. In math, we just finished up our math proof for how many tickets each kid would get in the different groups. After we finished our partner proof, we had a gallery walk and wrote helpful tips for each mathematician. We were also looking for the most efficient proof and talked about using a ten or other landmark number to divide. After our congress, we chose a proof that we were most proud of and hung it up in the classroom. We came up with new goals that we could set for ourselves by looking at the "Powerful Proof" and seeing what we needed to do as mathematicians to reach a 4 power proof. We also used our other proofs and comments from others to help us set goals. ML, CH, SL, CR, AT
  3. We have been learning the different word study activities and are getting ready to start on Monday with our word sorts! We learned resort and write about the sort, spelling sentences, blind writing sort, color the category, and word hunt. WD, CH
  4. In gym we did the mile run. WT
  5. In reading workshop, we are learning strategies to become better readers. We practice these strategies by jotting. One reading strategy is to look at a series of ideas we have and find commonalities and then jot long about the new ideas we are having. We keep track of our thinking throughout the entire books and use boxes and bullets to organize our thinking. The box represent our big ideas or theories and the bullets are the evidence that we find from the text to support our big ideas. CW, WT, TS
  6. In art, we are continuing to work on our eagles and many of us have finished. DM
  7. In Spanish, we made a skull for the Mexican Celebration Day of the Dead. OP & AT

Week In Review 9/23 -9/27

  1. In reading workshop we have been studying our characters and thinking about their character traits. We are all jotting about characters trying to grow theories about them. We noticed that some character traits match well with others. We have been working on noticing when our characters are not acting like themselves and then we jot down a new theory about them. We use the prompt, "I used to think.... but now I think..." We also went back and revisited our reading goal to see the progress we are making towards achieving them. ML, ET, CR, SL, OP, JW
  2. In writing workshop, we edited our pieces and realize that as writers we have important tools that we carry with us: spelling, punctuation, and tenses. We finished up our realistic fiction drafts and starting thinking about titles for our stories. We are now in the publishing phase of the writing process.  KL, WV, CH
  3. In math, we started a new investigation. There was talk in the teacher's lounge that there might be a field trip to an amusement park. There are 100 kids and thirteen chaperones. We had to figure out how many students would be in each group. We tried to make even groups, but since we couldn't halve numbers we realized that some groups would be uneven. We are always thinking about new strategies to help us with our math. We are learning to use open arrays flexibly when multiplying numbers. We realized that we can split numbers and add on to our array to make it easier to solve. We are starting our math proof today! We played the game, "Fill the Machine" with our math partners. It helped us to learn how to use arrays. AT, WD, JW, TS, PD
  4. In gym, we are still playing soccer and working on the fitness test and mile run. WT, AP
  5. We came in this morning and were extremely excited to read all the letters from our parents! SM
  6. We had a substitute this week and she helped us learn for the day! LM
  7. 5 people have been caught in the "I caught you jar." Wyatt won this week! CH, WJ
  8. We read the Tiger Rising and Rob is the main character. We are growing different theories about him. CC
  9. In art, we are drawing eagles in honor of Veteran's Day. CW

Week in Review 9/16 - 9/20

  1. In Writing Workshop we are really close to finishing your stories. We were reading our draft through different color glasses to teach us that writers revise their stories by reading through different lenses. We have been revising our drafts in different colored pens to show how we are improving our stories. These lenses helped us revise our drafts in different ones, for example we read through the lens of cardboard character alert making sure that our character wasn't floating. We created a Tips, Advice & Reminders section in our Writer's Notebooks. We created our own teacher charts to remind ourselves of the great things writers do. For example, some of us studied mentor texts for punctuation and dialogue. We included these in our tips and advice section to remind us how to use these different types of punctuation. At home, we made a writing spot for ourselves and drew a picture of it. We put stuff that would inspire us to write in these places. DM, CW, JW, WJ,
  2. In Math we started looking at a different vending machine: The Iced Tea Machine. We were trying to find out how many boxes of iced tea would fit in the whole iced tea machine. The machine would hold 132 bottles. Each box held 10 six packs, which we figured out was 60 bottles. We came to the conclusion that the vending machine would hold 2 boxes and 2/10 of a box. It also held 2 boxes and 2 six packs. Lastly, it held 22 six packs. After talking with our partners, we then created a partner proof. We made a math portfolio and we put our very first proof alone and our very first partner proof in them. We made a goal to help push us to be the best mathematician we could possibly be both independently and with a partner! SL, JW, AP, WJ, AT, CR
  3. In gym we have been playing soccer. We played in teams four on four. We started training for fitness test. WT, WD, PD
  4. In reading workshop, we have been working on making predictions. We make predictions by paying attention to the characters and figure out what they will do next and how they will do it. When we make predictions we read on and sometimes have to revise or grow a new idea. We use the evidence from the text to prove our thinking. We are also carrying forward all the strategies we have learned since the beginning of the year and third grade, such as growing a movie in our mind. We are in the middle of our character unit. Week in Review 9/9 - 9/13

  1. We have been making mental movies in our minds as we read. We have been jotting the mental movies we are having on stickies. We shared our mental movies with our partners. We try to use these prompts: "I can see..." "I can hear..." "I can feel..." "I can taste..." "I can smell..." Sometimes as readers we  revise our mental movies when we get more information about our characters and the setting. We have our just right book levels and are trying to read books are these levels so we can grow as readers. WE went to the library and looked up books that are our level and started a list of just right books in our notebooks. We are constantly pushing ourself to reach our reading goals! WJ, AT, CH, ML, OP, JW, AP, SM, KL, SL, CW, WT
  2. In math, we have new math partners. We have been investigating vending machines. At the teachers lounge of Tokeneke, there are two vending machines. One has 6 different kind of juice and one hold only water. We had to find out how many six-packs filled the machine if there were 156 bottle in total. There was also 156 bottles that fit in the juice vending machine. We had to figure out how many bottles of each flavor would fit in this machine. We made posters that showed all of our thinking to prove our work. We had a gallery walk and noticed difference and similarities between strategies used on these posters. At the end, we examined some of the proofs and made a list of  helpful strategies. AT, WT, CW, JW, OP, GF, PD, WD, ET
  3. We earned another piece to Mrs. Potato head because we worked together as a class. We came into the classroom and sat on the rug waiting quietly without being asked! Now we have pants, eyes, and the potato. DM, KL, AT
  4. During writing, we started plotting our scenes from our story arcs onto a drafting booklet. We wrote leads and revised them by studying published authors and noticing what they do. We noticed that they use dialogue, show don't tell, actions, flashbacks, description of the setting. WE studied a former students piece to see how they went through the revising process. With our writing partners we talked about the different ways we could start our leads. We started drafting our stories and we are writing fast and strong. (Many Students)
  5. In second steps, we learned about listening with attention. WJ

Week in Review

  1. We have been generating ideas for fiction stories by writing small moments and then turning them into possible realistic fiction story ideas. We also thought about issues that matter to us and created a character who struggles with this issue. Lastly, we brainstormed ideas by thinking about stories we wish existed in the world. We brainstormed our own ideas and are writing about something that is important to us! We wrote 5-7 story ideas and then today we picked a story that we want to write about.  We are developing our characters internal and external traits. We described what our characters look like, how they behave, how they think about themselves, how others think about them. ML, CW, AT, WJ, SL, TS, AP
  2. In reading workshop, we have been working hard towards achieving our goals. We set reasonable goals for ourselves. We have reading partners and we share our thoughts with them. We are trying to read more and more everyday. We are also jotting down the thinking we have and put them in our reader's notebook when we are done. We have our own reading spots. We read aloud our stories to our reading partners and retold the story to see if we were reading a JR book. We have been picking out JR books and reading them! We shared our reading log with our reading partners and helped each other to set goals. Our reading partners also helped to determine whether we were reading JR books from looking at our logs! We watched a video of two partners who were studying their logs and we noticed how they talk long about their reading lives. We created a chart together as a class to help us study logs and talk long about them. CW, WT, LM, SL, CH, WJ, AT, PD, JW OP
  3. In math, we have been working on math strings. We talked with our partners about strategies we are using as mathematicians. We figured out it is easy to move to a landmark number and then add or subtract the extra. We are noticing patterns in math and talking about them. We didn't just say the answer to the problem, we talked about efficient strategies and the numbers. We had an addition and subtraction string. CW, SL, OP, JW, GF, TS
  4. We are going to share our me boxes today! OP

Week in Review 8/26 -8/30

  1. In reading workshop we set goals for ourselves so we can improve as readers and be the best that we can be! . We had to make a plan to help us reach our goal. Some of us created trackers to help keep track of our progress. For example, some made calendars, charts, and sections in our reading notebooks.  We also have been trying to find just right books for ourselves e talked a lot about what a just right book is and talked with partners about whether our book was just right or not. We tested out our books to see if they were just right by reading to them. Our partners had to research if we were reading a just right book by seeing if we read smoothly, fluently, and accurately! We then had to retell. We learned about interactive read aloud by reading the book, "The Three Questions." We are also working on jotting down any thoughts we are having while we are reading. GF, CW, AT, CH, OP, SL, WJ, PD, WV, ET
  2. We celebrated Keara's birthday today with her mom, dad, sister, and friend!
  3. We have been getting to know one another in class. We played a game with a ball of string where we tossed the ball to a friend across from us. Each time we tossed the ball of string we had to say something unique about ourselves. In the end it made a spiderweb! We learned that we are all unique in different ways and we have to work together as one class. We played another game called, "Three lies and one truth." We also decorated our own Coat of Arms, which holds the people and things we hold near and dear to our hearts. We created a time capsule, which is going to be locked away until the very last day of school. Lastly, we did a word search to get to know everyone's name in the class. AT, OP, SL, CH, WJ, ET, LM
  4. We have been sharing our summer reading with the class. WD
  5. Mrs. Doty came in and we did a count around. The next time we had math, we used Mrs. Party Potato head during our count around for good luck to help remind us the importance of working together as one class! We earned two pieces...8 more pieces to go until we earn a PAAAAAARTY! CC, TS, SL, CW,
  6. In gym we played mat ball and sit. WT
In writing, we wrote an on demand prompt about a true story from our lives. We also had a spelling test and we made sure to try our best! We had a decorating party and decorated our writer's notebooks.  ML, SM, KL

This is is our first week of school and this is our first week in review and we accidentally deleted our first one! (but fortunately, it secretely saved as a draft and Miss Sproch found it while we were in music!) DM , Miss Sproch

Week In Review 5/28 - 5/31

Sorry for the pause in our weekly reviews, but we have been hard at work! We found some time to share the important happenings with you!

  1.  In math we started the Box Factory. We are looking for all the possible box dimensions that will hold 24 items. We have been investigating trying to find all the dimensions. Some mathematicans are finishing up and beginning their proof. On Wednesday, Mrs. Goldstein came in during math. She came around to see what we were doing and we had to explain how we were finding box dimensions. We have been using a lot of multiplication because there are layers, rows, and columns. RB, CV, AA, DS
  2. In gym we played volleyball! It is a very hot day! Mr. Bartol and Mr. Ernst are preparing us for field day by having us play the games that we will play on field day. We used to like having gym outside, but now it is too hot! KV, JW, NL
  3. We are drafting our historical fiction stories. We have a drafting booklet and we have 3-4 important scenes. In our drafting booklet we have leads, important scenes, and then powerful ending! In our scenes we are trying to include information about the historical era, setting, character's actions, character's personalities, and dialogue. We are trying to teach others about our historical era through our fiction writing. We are also working on showing and not telling, we learned from Cristian's writing that we can stretch out a small moment into exact actions! We began drafting endings today. We are trying to make our endings leave a lasting impression and image. Our endings don't have to resolve the whole historical problem, but it has to resolve the problem our character is facing. Our endings can be happy or sad, but we need to have a satisfying ending for our readers that resolves all problems and ties up any loose ends.  After we draft, we will start to revise and edit. CV, WS, NL, RB, CO, GS
  4. In reading workshop, we are in the middle of our social issues unit and we are talking about golden and diamond jots for Big Ideas about themes and lessons. If we have a one or two bulb jot, we have to push ourselves to include more information to make our jots more powerful. We had a partner read our jot, give us feedback, and then revised to make them more powerful. A powerful jot about themes and lessons has a character's life lesson, how this lesson applies to other people in this situation, evidence from the text, and how we can let this change our lives. In our book clubs, we are trying to talk long about one jot and see how much we can talk about this idea instead of skipping over each idea quickly. We have set goals within our club for how much to read and the work we will do each day.AA, CV, AN, MA,
  5. We have 14 more days of school left. AC
  6. In social studies, we are wrapping up the Southwest region and starting the West next week. We are going to learn about the West region in centers! AA, MS
  7. In Spanish, we had a test this week. We had to show how much we have learned in Spanish this year. We are also learning about the weather and letters. Hace calor en escuela!!!!!!! That means it is very hot in school. AN, CV
  8. In Joey Pigza, Joey swallowed the key and the nurse understands how he is. She is understanding of Joey, where Mrs. Maxy is not as understanding. Joey trusts the nurse and tells her about his life. Mrs. Maxy says that it isn't good for Joey to eat anything sweet and when they are on the field trip, he is not allowed to have a piece of pie like everyone else. He sneaks away and ends up eating a whole pie, winds up on the top of a barn , and jumps off the roof! AA, CV, AN
