Week in Review

9/26 -9/30

Writing:

  • We learned how to get into our characters shoes to SHOW NOT TELL our characters feelings, thoughts, and actions. We also saw their setting. CM
  • We drafted stronger leads by including the setting, hinting at the problem that character would face, using dialogue, and using something that repeats throughout our story. AA
  • We worked on planning our story using story arcs. This helped us to figure out our scenes and show how our character struggles with a problem and resolves it. MM
  • We chose the story arc that is THE ONE we would draft. WB
  • We are using checklists to make sure we include setting, dialogue, thoughts, actions, and feelings in EACH scene. HH
  • We learned to storytell instead of summarizing! WB
  • We took "Once upon a time" and "One day" and threw it away! NC
Reading:
  • We read short texts and came up with debatable ideas! We know this means that there are two sides that could be argued. We chose our debatable idea and the position we took. CS
  • We are continuing to work on our reading goals! RP
  • We know that characters are not one way, they are COMPLEX! WB
  • We are using precise words to describe our characters, never settling on the first idea, but really thinking hard about who they are as a person! AA
  • We have also been working one envisioning, making sure that we make mental movies in our minds while we read. ZG
  • We are noticing that authors craft their stories purposefully and they repeat important images, phrases, or actions! CS
Math:
  • Last week, we took AIMSWEBB on the computer. We also are learning how to problem solve using exemplars. QK
  • We are learning how to use the addition algorithm. Did you know that there are two different ways to use it?! SM
  • We are learning different addition strategies so we have more than one way to solve a problem! PA
  • We learned the strategy of Robin Hood-steal from one number and give to the other. This helps us to make friendlier numbers! GR
Social Studies
  • We have been learning about the Northeast. We also have a map quiz today! CW
  • We have been learning how where we live affects how we live. WB
  • Mrs. Riva Mrs. Whitacre came into our class to teach us about the Northeast through Portraits of America. GR
Second Steps:
  • We have been practicing to listen attentively. We use fix-up strategies when needed! CS
  • We are continuing to learn about empathy! WB
Leadership League:
  • We are nominating our 3 representative for leadership league today! AC
