  • We are reading nonfiction and noticing how an author has structured their text. BV
  • We learned a few new strategies to help us organize our new learning within nonfiction. LS
  • We are reading short texts and trying to tackle nonfiction! CH
  • We are learning how to tackle tricky words by looking around the word or looking in the word. GG
Math:
  • We worked on a Halloween logic problem today trying to figure out WHO wore WHAT costume. CN
  • We came up with our own survey questions and went to survey our group. VS
  • We then organized all of our data and analyzed the results. AA
Halloween:
  • We had a Halloween party and watched the kindergarten Halloween parade. JW
  • We played BINGO and had candy prizes.

  • We are learning to preview our nonfiction texts before reading. We preview texts so we can get ideas about what we will be learning. JE
  • We learned how to look for main ideas within our NF texts. BV
  • Everyone in the class is learning to organize their main ideas and supporting details using boxes and bullets. LS
  • We are reading towards our goals... our deadline is NOVEMBER 2nd! JW
Social Studies:
  • We took our Northeast region states and capitals test today! GG
  • We have been studying the northeast states in the library through centers. DR & LK
Writing:
  • We started our new writing unit in essays. We are learning to brainstorm essay ideas! MR
  • We wrote an essay about ice cream. Our thesis statement was, "I love ice cream." VS
  • We took a Pre-On Demand for essays so Miss Sproch knows what we know and where we need to go next! AA
  • After going through essay bootcamp, we went back to our Pre-On Demand and revised the structure! BV
  • We got another set of words for word study! CJ
Typing Club
  • We started a new program called, "Typing Club" to help us become better typists. This program will help us to type faster and also help us learn the home row! LD
Math:
  • We measured the heights of our partners, put all of our class data together, and compared our heights to the heights of first graders. MR
  • We know how to find the median of a data set. BW
  • We had a gallery walk to notice how other mathematicians organize their data. We gave each other a compliment and a tip on how to improve.JE & LD
  • We learned that mathematicians organize their information so if someone wanted to follow our thinking, they would know the steps we took. MR

Tuesday, October 13th- Friday, October 16th
Writing

  • We had our first writing celebration and we shared our realistic fiction stories with our parents! LD
  • We planned and rehearsed our celebration so we would be prepared to teach our parents about the writing process. LK
  • We wrote two on demands--POST on demand for realistic fiction to show all we learned and a PRE on demand for essays to show what we already know. AA
  • We are going to be reflecting on our journey of writing with our parents to see how much we have grown so far and to set new goals to push us even further! JE
Social Studies
  • We are getting ready for our northeast map test. We are learning how to study for a map test by making a study map. We outlined the states in different colors, and labeled the state name and capitol. We made sure our spelling is accurate! CH
  • We used the maps in social studies books to help us! WM
Math
  • We started a new unit in Data. We are learning about collecting data by counting m & m's in a snack size bag. CJ
  • We learned how to organize our data using a line plot, a bar graph or an ordered list! VS
  • We also looked at data from Mrs. Rongoe's class and practiced organizing the data.
  • After organizing your data, you can draw conclusions about it by thinking about the mode, range, typical, and atypical. BV
  • After collecting our m & m data, we ate it! The Sprochstars
Reading
  • We started writing new reading goals by looking to artifacts. We can analyze our reading notebooks or reading logs to help us set SMART goals! LS
  • We took a post assessment to see how much we have grown as readers! CL
  • We are still reading, logging, and jotting every day and every night! WM
Word Study
  • We got our second sort and are continuing to study spelling patterns and trying to use them in our writing. CN
MYSTERY:
  • We are going to Miss Dineen's first grade classroom today, but we have no idea why?! Miss Sproch is sooooo sneaky! Ask us about this later! GG

  • We received a new reading rubric for Growing Ideas About Characters. We used this to help us lift our level of thinking about the characters in our stories. AD
  • We developed character theories for our characters in the Tiger Rising. MR
  • We are jotting more about our characters and beginning to notice how they are complicated! AA
  • When a character acts differently around different people or in different situations we notice this because it can signal that our character is complex! CN
Writing:
  • We learned about the different lenses writers use when they revise! CL
  • We finished our realistic fiction drafts! GG
  • Using a checklist, we are editing our pieces! BV
  • Editing and revising are two different things- Editing is fixing the grammar of our writing and revising is fixing the craft of our writing. LK
Word Study:
  • Everyone met with Miss Sproch this week to receive our very first sorts. VS
  • We started our 6 day word study cycle. JE

Math:
  • We made multiplication cards to help us become more fluent with our facts.

  • We are currently trying to figure out: What are the factors of 100? How many factor pairs does it have? and How do mathematicians find factors of #'s and make sure they have them all? AA

  • Today in library, we received our accounts, learned about digital citizenship, and posted responses using google classroom. CH
Leadership League:
  • We voted for our class leadership league repesentatives! Congratulations to Blake, Morgan, and Alaina! BW
