Writer’s read a text closely by noticing when an author describes something in an unusual way.
- Read your story bit-by-bit as closely and carefully as you can.
- Notice when the author uses details to describe something in an unusual way.
- Use thought prompts to push your thinking.
- End with a new idea about your text and underline it!

November 9 - November 13
Writing:
- We started publishing our personal essays using Google Docs. AD
- We finished the writing process of essays. We learned to brainstorm, plan, draft, organize, edit and revise using a checklist, and publish! JE
- We worked on writing strong leads and endings. BV
- We revised our pieces using checklists to make sure that we had a strong structure, developed our ideas, and spelling and punctuation. WM
- We also wrote a flash draft on demand to show all that we are holding on to as essay writers. CN
- We use different colors to help us revise our work when using the checklist. We use the colors to show where in our piece we are doing the work. LS
Math:
- We are working on multiplication and using arrays to help us solve problems and show our thinking. CJ
- We are continuing to practice organizing data using line plots. DR
- We are getting ready to learn division next week! CH
- We are "looking into numbers" to help us problem solve more complex problems. VS
- We did math strings to help us learn how to look into numbers. AA
- We made a mini review packet for our "Show what we know" today! CL
- We played a new math game that helped us to put two smaller arrays together to solve a larger array. BW
Reading:
- We have been learning how to read narrative non-fiction. This is non-fiction information that is taught in the form of a story. MR
- We are going to be starting a new reading unit next week. We will be reading the same book with a partner! LD
- We went to the library and used Destiny and Booksource to find just right books with our partners. WM
- We are pushing ourselves to maintain our reading goals. WM
Science:
- We tested our hypotheses about what sticks to magnets and what would not. We recorded our findings and drew conclusions about the results of our experiment. JW
- We realized that steel, iron, and some copper stick to magnets. Other materials like aluminum, cardboard, and plastic do not stick. JE

Writing:
We worked on
writing strong leads and endings for our essays! AD
We have been
writing lots of mini stories to support our thesis statements! LK
We have been
revising our mini stories to make them as strong as possible. We do this by
highlighting the parts that prove our thesis statement and revise the parts
that don’t. BV & MR
We created folders
for our reasons and started to fill them with evidence! GG
We decided on an
order for our evidence and folders, taped them together, and use transition
words to glue our ideas together. JE & CN
Science:
We are learning
about electricity and magnetism. CJ
We had to guess
what an item was in a mystery bag… shhhh! We cannot tell you what it is because
we are sworn to secrecy! AA
We are going to
switch with the other teachers to learn different topics in science. WM
We are making
hypotheses about what types of materials will stick to magnets and what types
of materials will not stick to magnets. We will then conduct an experiment to
confirm or revise our hypotheses. LD
Reading:
We went to the
library to shop for narrative nonfiction. Narrative nonfiction is learning
nonfiction information through story form. LS
We are learning to
identify text structures and use them to help us find MAIN IDEAS and supporting
details, organize our new learning, and write summaries! BW
Main idea is what
the text is all about. You can find it by looking for a POP OUT sentence. LK
The pop out
sentence is usually the first, last or sometimes the second sentence. JE
Math:
We took a
preassessment for our next unit which is multiplication and division! MR
We also took a
two-pen assessment to see how we are doing with our fluency on multiplication
facts. AA
We made new math
goals for homework. VS
Other:
We had a Veteran’s
Day celebration to honor the veterans and how they served our country. CH
We got to ask the veteran’s
questions about their service and listen to the fifth grade chorus. DR
There was an assembly
from the Connecticut Ballet Center. They showed us dances from around the
world. EVERYONE
