Week in Review 1/6 - 1/10

  1. In reading we started historical fiction book clubs. We talked about book club bottom lines in order to make sure our clubs run smoothly. We set goals within our clubs to determine how many pages we will read each day. This is important so we stay at the same page, don't get ahead and possibly spoil the book for others! While we are reading, we are paying attention to the characters, setting, the history and the mood of the story. CR, WT, CH, LM, WD
  2. In writing we are drafting our persuasive essays. We should have our essays finished by Monday. When writing a persuasive essay, we take out our opinions and we apply them to MANY people. It is important to know who your audience is and write to persuade them. We learned about using evidence to support our claim. One way to do this is by interviewing people to write mini stories. We angle the mini stories to persuade our readers of our claim. We can also research to find facts and statistics to support our claim. We have been working hard to convince our audience by connecting our evidence back to our reasons and claim. CR, AT, WV, GF, OP, WD
  3. Yesterday we had High Touch, High Tech and we learned about rain and made a cloud inside the classroom. We made fresh water by filtering it with soil, sand, and both big and little rocks. We talked about the life cycle of water and how it works. We put water in two different cups, one with ice and one without. We could feel water on the outside of the cup. This is called condensation. Lastly, we got fortune telling fish that move when there is moisture in the air. DM, WT, CH, SL, AT, WD
  4. In gym we are playing basketball. CW
  5. In math we started learning about fractions. We are finding different fractions of squares and we are also noticing how some fractions are equal to others like 3/6 = 1/2. The number on the top is called the numerator and bottom is called the denominator. The numerator is how many shaded or shared and the denominator is how many equal parts. We are working with halves, fourths, eights, thirds, and sixths. AT, WT, CH, KL, JW, GF, SM
