Week In Review 3/18 - 3/22

  1. In math workshop we set goals for ourselves and some of us made revisions to our goals. We are making goals so that we can be the best mathematicians we can be.  We are also making a tracking device to show how we are progressing towards our goals.   We are still working with our friends, the frogs, but this investigation we are trying to figure out how much fencing to put around the jumping arena. We are trying to find out how many 6 foot pieces of fence and 8 foot pieces of fence would go around the arena. The arena is 66 feet by 52 feet.  Mr. Forshaw came in for math today and was talking to us about what we are working on. RB, MW, CO,AA, WS, NL, FH
  2. In reading workshop, we are continuing to read historical fiction with our book clubs and Mrs. Doty came in to teach us about GOLDEN JOTS in order to make our post-its even better! A GOLDEN JOT has a character, a trait, and more than one piece of evidence in it. She even talked with a few other friends about DIAMOND JOTS, which has a character, trait, multiple pieces of evidence and a theory or prediction. We also learned that we do not leave post-its behind, we can go back and REVISE them or ADD on to them! Most book clubs have finished their first chapter books. We talked about noticing when time is changing because it can jump forward or jump backward. We can make a timeline of what has happened and notice the order of which things are happening. We practiced this on Jack and Jill, but this was not the ordinary story, it was much more complicated! We also have a bookmark to help us keep track of our reading goal, which is kind of like a log for us. We are choosing new books in the hallway about our topic when we are done. WS, NL, AA, MW, FD, GS, FH, AN, JW, DS, MA
  3. We continue to work on Poetry in writing workshop. We are trying to write poems that have strong feelings about someone or something. We are thinking deeply about these small moments in our life and show, don't tell in order to express our feelings. We also learned about line breaks. Line breaks give our poems the sound of music. When we write our poems, we are trying to write free form poems that express feelings. Almost all of us are finished recording our essays... be on the lookout for them soon! MA, AN, CV, AC,
  4. In music we are writing music in our composition book. FH
  5. My birthday was this week! FD
  6. In social studies everyone is studying one aspect of the midwest. We all picked our topic and we will research this further and create a travel magazine or our very own class newspaper. RB, AC, GS
  7. In science we are still building a vehicle from a blueprint.
Lastly, there is a very informative meeting about math on Tuesday, March 26th at 9:30 for parents. Be prepared to work your brain because you will get the chance to experience the math thinking we do everyday!
